At the beginning of the year, you may have noticed the changes that Google made to its YouTube service. The newly presented channel in version 4, codenamed Hitchhiker (hitchhiker) and officially named the Unified YouTube Channel, we will now examine in a little more detail, both the commonly used free version and the paid version that allows you to create your own gadgets (the so-called YouTube Custom Gadget Channel ). In the case of both variants, this is a significant change for YouTube, which brings many interesting improvements. A YouTube channel should not be just a repository of uploaded videos, but an additional communication channel that will provide viewers with information about your products or services and help build a community of loyal brand fans. It will serve as an opportunity to brand the channel on all devices, display more content than before, reach even those who are not subscribers to your content, and more.

Gradually, there was an automatic transition to the new version, which offers a three-column layout. The left column is dedicated to the guide, where users can find playback history, video lists or subscribed content, the right column is then dedicated to favorite and related channels, and the middle column is for custom videos or creating a custom gadget that will dynamically expand depending on the screen size from 640px to 1060px. In addition to changes in the layout of the channel, the new version brings, for example, the option to set a trailer. That is, one video that is only shown to viewers who are not subscribed. It is also now possible to publish links to your own website or social networks directly within the area designated for channel art.



One look for all devices Probably the most significant change, especially given the ever-increasing use of mobile devices for accessing content on the Internet, is the ability to display the channel uniformly on all devices. The channel design now smartly adapts to look good on any screen size. The content of the channel thus becomes accessible to all devices with a web browser. Although it is possible to view the new channel with a uniform appearance on all devices, we lose the ability to upload our own background, as was the case with the previous version. In addition, it is necessary to play with the new channel art (a kind of Facebook-style cover image) and make sure that the key message is placed in an area that is visible on all devices. This is because the image will be reduced or enlarged according to the mobile device on which it will be displayed. It is therefore necessary to follow the specifications for the creation of the channel design .
