Sugar cane is an important element in the national economy and an irreplaceable input, providing more than 440 thousand direct jobs and more than 2 million indirect jobs. Due to its demand and being in purely rural regions, this sector is usually the most prone to hiring underage personnel. In Mexico, according to figures from the INEGI , there are 3.3 million girls, boys and adolescents between 5 and 17 years old who are working, the above represents a disadvantage, since the majority does not have access to education and even their activities are carried out in circumstances that violate their rights and lives. And the outlook to date is not encouraging, since it is estimated that in 2022, the number of minors in child labor conditions will increase by 5.5% , so eradicating child labor is a priority in the construction of fairer societies.
Aware of the impact that it can have to achieve this objective within sugarcane crops, Grupo Azucarero del Trópico (GAT) —a Mexican company dedicated to the commercialization of sugar and its UK Email List derivatives—has implemented as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy ( CSR), five initiatives that contribute to reducing this problem inside and outside their mills.
